Cause of Death: Hospitals?

The best news right up front.

If you're following a whole foods, plant-based diet – and if you're exercising regularly – your chances of avoiding the Number Three leading cause of death are greatly improved.

In fact, your chances of avoiding most (accidents are not always avoidable) of the 15 leading causes of death on the list of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are improved.

But the following scares me.

Right behind the two leaders in premature death in America – coronary heart disease and cancer –

Hospitals and Doctors are Number Three! (*)

With increasing age, chances are some of us seniors – particularly those on the Standard American Diet (SAD) - require a hospital stay.

In fact, due to a lifelong "less than optimal" dietary and exercise lifestyle quite a large number of older adults end up in acute hospital care.

According to the CDC, one in 25 Americans acquires an infection in hospital. Infections of surgical sites, urinary tracts and bloodstream are common ones.

All this results in about 75,000 deaths per year. That's 205 deaths a day.

I have no desire to be part of this disturbing statistic. Do you?

Some hospitals (and physicians) are worse than others.

Since we can't all simply choose what hospital or what doctor to go to – many of the seniors are on Medicare – we really should pick the better alternative:

* Truly healthy plant-based nutrition

* Frequent physical activity (exercise)

As a subscriber to my newsletter you already know my message to the senior population.

Won't you please help me spread this message to your family, friends, neighbors, and beyond?

I have to assume that nobody likes to go to a hospital. Not even for a visit.

So why not help keep your loved ones and friends out of hospitals and doctors' offices…

If you or someone else has questions about health behavior changes - contact me. I'm here to listen.

As you already know, I enjoy being my peers' guide, supporter and cheerleader.

Take time for dietary and exercise improvements. Make time for living! Make time for challenges!

One of the goals of is to show you how to live a longer and healthier life by learning from many different older adults, including centenarians.

You can look forward to lots of encouraging information in future editions of SeniorZine.

Yours in good senior health,

Guenter Hauser, CHC, CFT, SSF

(*) Giving in to pressures from the medical establishment, the CDC doesn't list hospitals and doctors as #3. Omitting the true third leading cause of death, they list chronic pulmonary diseases there.
