When you’re a senior citizen, sex is a taboo subject, i.e. “prohibited or restricted by social custom - (New Oxford American Dictionary).”
I’m in my mid-sixties now, and I wonder if you too were brought up to regard senior citizen sex as something nonexistent. Especially in light of the notion that people died at that age anyway...
Well, guess what - You and I - we’re still here, looking forward to a long, fulfilling, and healthy life.
Whatever senior citizen sex means to some, to a healthy older adult it means that the need for intimacy and affection, and yes, the desire for sexual activity, is a vital part of living.
The keyword here is “healthy older adult” - and I’ll come back to that in a bit…
Your need - and desire - for physical intimacy as well as emotional connection has no age limit.
Fact is, the positive effects of being in a healthy sexual relationship extend to virtually every facet of your senior life, from self-esteem to youthful vitality to longevity.
Therefore, senior citizen sex helps you thrive in your advanced years.
Hopefully you are one of the many seniors who can report that their sex lives not only thrive but improve with age.
It is now well-known (finally!) that - while sex in your sixties and seventies is not exactly the same as it was in younger years - you can continue to enjoy sexual desires, fantasies, and activities into your eighties, nineties, and beyond!
All it take is some understanding of, and adjustment to, certain age-related changes in bodily function and mental attitude.
Isn’t this marvelous news?
As long as both partners in a relationship accept the need for understanding and making adjustments, senior citizen sex can be an even better experience than it has been throughout your previous life (see also Sex and Aging).
You are likely fully retired now. Or at least you have less stressful commitments sapping your energy, so you can relax with your partner and have time to enjoy each other.
Senior Romance comes to mind.
You can encourage each other to share your thoughts and feelings, your desires and fears. Actually, simply talking about sex can make you feel sexy and lead to sexual activity. In such a comfortable atmosphere senior sex is often more pleasurable and passionate.
Earlier I mentioned necessary adjustments due to age-related physiological changes. There is no need to give up one of the most pleasurable activities in life.
Experiment and explore. Different positions may turn out to be more comfortable for both of you. Expand your sexual experience beyond intercourse. Kissing, gentle holding, touching and massaging can be beautifully arousing.
Be creative and open-minded. An active mind stimulates your imagination.
Naturally, there are more ways to enjoy great sexual intimacy...
But this page will now concentrate on the two things without which great sex, especially senior citizen sex, has NO chance to flourish...
A well-balanced diet with an abundance of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts and seeds - basically a whole foods, plant-based diet - will assure your body of all the vital nutrients it needs to function at its best.
A well-nourished body (see Anti-Aging Diet for more) will provide you the resources to exercise regularly, frequently, even vigorously - with consideration given to age-related limitations.
