Seniors Just Do It

According to an unprecedented but comprehensive sex study of more than 3000 seniors in the U.S. aged 57 to 85 years, great numbers of older adults enjoy a surprisingly active and even frisky sex life.

Sex after 60 is certainly no myth, as this federally funded survey clearly proves.

True, with advancing age, frequency of sexual activity drops off. However, this is due basically to declining health and/or lack of a partner.

It's true especially for women – they outlive men by several years.

The thinking that sex and physical pleasure is to be enjoyed only by young people has been erased by the study.

Sex after 60 is alive and well, thank you very much.

Here are some of the findings...

Research shows there is much more action going on in the bedrooms of seniors over the age of sixty – and continues among seniors in their seventies and eighties – than meets the eye.

Over 50 percent of the participants in the study said they gave or received oral sex. Among seniors 75 to 85 years old about a third did.

With advancing age, sex with a partner declined from 73 percent (age 57) to 26 percent at age 85.

Of those who were sexually active, frequency was two to three times a month or more.

Seniors whose health was excellent or very good were nearly twice as likely to be sexually active as those in poor or fair health.

Being able to have and enjoy sex after 60 is an important indicator of senior health.

This brings me to the main reason for writing this page.

SeniorHealthSuccess' goal is to encourage seniors of all ages to maintain – or regain – optimal health.

The way to achieve this is through a healthy lifestyle.

One obvious requirement for enjoying good, satisfying sex after 60 (into your nineties or more) is changing from the Standard American Diet (SAD) to a much healthier whole foods, plant-based diet.

Why?  A tired, obese, chronically ill and heavily medicated body just doesn't have what it takes to enjoy a satisfying sex life. The SAD diet leaves you sluggish and depressed.

The other requirement is physical exercise.

It goes hand in hand with a healthy diet.

Maintaining your body in the best shape and condition possible is not about acrobatics under the sheets. But let's face it – a body that's in dire need of tune-up just can't perform as well as hoped for.

And a last but certainly major component of this equation is your mental health.

Without a sound mind due to medication for depression, dementia, aches and pains, and chronic conditions, it is nearly impossible to make a healthy emotional connection to the partner.

Sex after 60 relies a great deal on healthy emotion. It's paramount. Our bodies simply can no longer do what they were used to doing at a younger age.

But with a lifestyle of healthful eating and exercise it is clear from all research that mental health soars (see Brain Health) and senior sexuality can be enjoyed for years to come.
